New York to Rio. Can Jose do it?

Jose Castro - Ze Do Pedal

At last contact 11/12/05 Jose was in Panama, he intended to go home and decide what to do next. He thought he may stay there or resume his trip at some later date.

Prophish wishes Jose well in all things. Prophish is proud of Jose and his GlasSkipper pedal boat in all they accomplished together on this extreme solo adventure. Proving "once again" that human powered boats aren't just useless toys, but can be tickets to high adventure and extreme fun.

The Trip

If you are lucky enough to see Jose, Prophish would appreciate a quick note including, the time and place. Photos and full Names are used only with your permission. THANK YOU!

6/16/05 Coatzacoalcos, Mexico, Post from Jose. Three days of tropical rain. I arrive at Coatzacoalcos, the last large city in State of Veracruz, next I will be in the state of Tabasco. Everything is fine, the trip goes well. The ocean has been very calm. I parked Liberty near a big ship sitting on the sand, I hope to send a photo as soon as possible.

5/14/05 Veracruz, Mexico, Post from Jose. Good and wonderfull morning. I got to Veracruz last Thursday (5/12/05) everything in very good shape. My next stop should be in Coatzacoalcos, about 200 miles from here, the last city of Veracruz State.

5/7/05 Palma Sola, Mexico, Post from Jose. The trip going slow, but its going. I expect to arrive in Veracruz in three more days, the winds blow so hard here.

4/28/05 Nautla, Mexico, Post from Jose. "The wind is too strong to leave today. I'm OK, I was just taking a little sleep...that's all...a little mistake and splash. I lost tools and spare parts, rain suit, some clothes and everything else is all wet, including the newspaper and magazine clippings. Don't worry...I'm sure. I hope to leave again for Veracruz tomorrow."

If anyone has copies of newspaper or magazine articles concerning Jose, it would be great to send them to us here at ProPhish, so we could surprise Jose with some dry copies for his memories. Thank You.

4/27/05 - Guadalupe beach, Mexico - Post from Jose. "It was a different day. No sun in the sky. It was gray. The winds from the North. Blow slowly...softly. And then all is changed. The slow wind changed to fast wind. From 4 to 40 miles per hour. The ocean became choppy. And get me a little sleepy. A wave... A 12 foot one. Get me by side, and all became wet. When I look around. I'm sitting on the TOP of the Bottom. Looking at everything. I catch the paddle and paddle to the beach. A fisherman helps me turn the boat over again. At the end of the day. Nothing is changed. The day still grey. The ocean still choppy, and I'm very wet. That was the day. The day I capsized, and I will never forget."

4/21/05 - Mexico City, Mexico. Jose is still in Mexico City doing television and other media interviews. He hopes to get back on the water soon.
